Spring Street River Garden’s 5th year

A bit of history

Spring Street River Garden in 2018, our first planting.

On May 9, 2018, WFSB awarded $1000 to the Stafford Garden Club as the recipient of their 20 Towns in 20 Days segment. We were so proud to have been nominated by other groups and organizations in Stafford to receive that award. Those funds allowed the SGC to purchase the soil and plants necessary to transform the barren strip of land along the Middle River into a garden we now call the Spring Street River Garden.

We did not plant the entire length of the fence during that first season. We first expanded the garden in 2019 for the Tricentennial Celebration and, ever since, have added more plants over the years. This garden is part of the Pollinator Pathways of CT, meaning it is full of native plants that attract pollinators.

The garden's caretaker, Steve Zamsky, recently finished spreading fresh mulch and planting some white ground phlox near the wall for the garden's foreground. With Steve's dedication to maintaining and improving this space, the garden has evolved into the garden you see today. What a difference five years can make!

May 9, 2023, will mark the fifth anniversary of the award. The Spring Street River Garden will enter its sixth season as a garden made possible by the hard work of SGC members and donations from our supporters.
